Advance marketing short course: creating a sales forecast for your agricultural business

CONCORD — Are you thinking about expanding your operation by adding a new product, growing more of what you’re already producing or moving into a totally different line of products?

Expanding your operation, will require some market research, which thought it may sound intimidating, simply involve gathering information, making observation and analyzing what you learned to create forecast. If interested in doing your own research that will help you avoid costly mistakes and make better decisions by creating a roadmap that will take you beyond simply guessing or speculating about sales.

In this advanced short course, business owners will learn how to evaluate market demand, segment the market and understand their customers. Course participants will also learn how to plan for marketing risks; track and forecast sales; evaluate marketing costs and understand business rules and regulations.

The course’s four sessions will take place on Wednesday, Jan. 9, Jan. 16, Jan. 23 and Jan. 30, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Granite State College in Concord.

Who should attend: Any farmer interested in doing market research to evaluate market potential and risks.

Pre-requisite: Most beneficial for farmers with at least 2-3 year experience selling an agricultural product and want to explore a new idea for a product or market.

What is needed: Willingness to dig for the information needed for you agricultural business and work at your own pace between weekly classes to take you from Point A to Point B following the instructors’ lead from UNH Cooperative Extension, Agriculture Business Management Specialists, Mike Sciabarrasi and Nada Haddad.

Guest speakers include livestock producers Liz and Jeff Conrad of Riverslea Farm in Epping; vegetable grower and value-added producer John Moulton of Moulton Farm in Meredith and agricultural service providers.

During the course there will be plenty of opportunities to share expertise and learn from one another.
