CHARLESTOWN — Earl Dwight Campbell, 94, passed away on Dec. 18, 2018 at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. He was born on Jan. 19, 1924 the son of Chester Dwight and Nellie Elizabeth (Richardson) Campbell in Springfield, Vermont.
He resided in Milford, Connecticut and Bellows Falls, Vermont and had been a resident of Charlestown since 1958.
He attended Milford, Connecticut high schools and was a 1948 graduate of Bullard-Havens Technical School in Bridgeport, Connecticut in drafting.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945 during World War II. He received four Battle Campaign Stars, a Good Conduct Medal, and a Ribbon Victory Medal.
Earl was employed with Bryant Chucking Grinder Co. for seven years as a draftsman. He worked for Cone (Automatic) Blanchard Machine Co. as a draftsman, design draftsman, and group leader for 25 years, before retiring in 1983. He also worked at M.S. Perkins Machine Co. and Appropriate Technology Corporation after retiring.
On Aug. 20, 1949 he married Jean Ellen Donovan in Bellows Falls, Vermont.
He was a member of St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Charlestown and treasurer of the St. Catherine’s Knights of Columbus Council 6938 for 21 years and later was a trustee. He was also a member of the Father Cote Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus 0635 in Claremont. Earl was the finance officer at Cone’s Steelworkers Office Union 3591 for 11 years and was a member of the American Legion Post 53 in Charlestown and the American Legion Post 29 in Claremont, as well as a life member of the VFW Post 8497 in Charlestown. He was a member of the Historical Society in Cheshire County, the AARP chapter 4344 in Claremont, the Genealogical Society of Vermont, and a member of the Lovell Family Association.
He was the genealogist of the family and is a co-author with his cousin Fred Richardson of the book “Haseltine Genealogy.” He enjoyed collecting stamps, cooking, westerns, and dancing. He loved to travel, camp, dine out, hunt, fish, and go on picnics. He cherished his family and kitty, Agne. He was a fan of the New England Patriots, Celtics, and Red Sox.
He was predeceased by his wife in 1983; brothers, Richard Campbell, Dean Campbell, Robert Campbell; sister, Catherine Stoll.
He is survived by his daughter, Cynthia Grenier and her husband Gary of Charlestown; one granddaughter, Jamie Lake and her husband Jared of Los Angeles, California; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Calling hours will be held at the Charlestown Memorial Chapel on Friday, Dec. 21 from 5 to 6 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Peter’s Church in North Walpole on Saturday at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in St. Peter’s Cemetery in Drewsville.
