NEWPORT — On Dec. 11th, the Richards Free Library presented the 18th annual Pamela Gay Award for Volunteerism to Barbara Kresse at the annual Volunteer Tea.
Barbara works with the RFL archivist Mary Lou McGuire and in that role she helped to improve the archives. Her first project was to organize and catalog the library’s vertical file, i.e. 50-plus years of newspaper clippings, programs, pamphlets and other assorted pieces of paper having to do with Newport. She also assisted in inventorying the artifacts throughout the library. Barbara’s knowledge of antiques and historical items was invaluable in setting up the parameters used and in recording and photographing 243 items.
The Award is named in memory of Pamela Gay who volunteered countless hours at the library and exemplified the true spirit of volunteerism not only at the library but several other area organizations.
