WESTMINSTER, Vt. – Bellows Falls girls basketball still remains perfect on the season after beating Leland and Gray 61-33 on Saturday afternoon.
Despite the 8-0 start to the winter, Terriers head coach Todd Wells admits that the toughest part of their schedule is ahead of them and he’s looking forward to the test.
The D-II Terriers had played all D-IV teams prior to Saturday’s tilt with the D-III Rebels.
Right off the bat on Saturday, BF wanted to make their presence known, as their full court press was in full effect with Wells subbing freely. The Terriers got out to an 18-11 lead after one and had a 33-20 halftime lead with Leland and Gray sitting back in a 2-3 zone. BF found the holes in the defense and was able to hit from deep.
In the third quarter, BF went on a 16-0 run to pull away. During that stretch, freshman Maya Waryas hit two three’s, junior Taylor Goodell had a layup and an and-one finish, junior Madison Pencek hit a three and senior Molly Kelly had a basket.
“All ten of the players I have a lot of confidence in, which helps because we can rotate all the players in… Leland and Gray was a little short-handed,” said coach Wells. “It also allows to keep running and keep playing our pressure game… and we started to wear them down in the second half.”
BF will take their 8-0 record to Windsor on Saturday, January 19 to take on the defending D-III state champs.
“That’ll be a good test to see where we’re at and see if we can stop some of our bad habits,” said Wells in anticipation of facing the Yellow Jackets.
BF also plays Green Mountain and Springfield each twice over the next month.
“They’re working hard in practice… they’re taking care of the ball and taking care of things we’re trying to do… so it’s coming along,” said Wells post-game on Saturday.
The BF girls will have to play like they have been, and then some, if they want to have similar success over the next month and a half.
Bellows Falls had nine players find the boxscore. They were led by 14 points from Goodell. Abbe Cravinho scored 9, Madison Streeter added 7, and Molly Potter, Halle Dickerson, Waryas, and Kelly all chipped in with 6 each.
