Windsor falls to Brattleboro, 49-44

WINDSOR, Vt. – The Yellow Jackets let one slip away on Friday night hosting the D-I Brattleboro Union Colonels, as they fall back to .500 with the 49-44 loss at home.

Windsor played a great game on both ends, but down the stretch, the Jacks didn’t make the most of their possessions and turned the ball over as the Colonels got hot in the fourth.

The Yellow Jackets led 35-28 after three hard-fought quarters where the refs seemed to be letting the boys slug it out.

In the fourth, Brattleboro outscored Windsor 21-9.

“We were stuck on 41 forever,” said Windsor head coach Harry Ladue. “They amped up their defense and gave us trouble and we just didn’t handle it well. They made plays at the end of the game and we didn’t.”

Windsor scored their 41st point with just over five minutes to play in the game and didn’t record another point until there were just 50 seconds left.

With four minutes to play, Brattleboro’s senior guard Adam Newton hit a deep three-pointer and then recorded a steal and a layup at the other end to put the visitors on top 43-41.

Brattleboro got a couple more steals and pushed their lead to 46-41 with 1:02 remaining.

With a Windsor timeout, the Yellow Jackets saw themselves down 5 with just over a minute to play. Their inbounds play resulted in an open look for senior Robert Slocum from well beyond the arc… and he sank it, cutting into the lead as they trailed just 46-44 with 50 seconds remaining.

The Colonels’ Jack Price hit one free throw to push the lead to three, 47-44. Slocum had another chance from three to tie the game with 40 seconds to play, but this shot was a tougher look and even further out than the previous attempt, and it just barely misfired.

Brattleboro iced the game with a couple more from the charity stripe and Windsor had a couple more desperation threes misfire.

“I can’t fault the effort. We played hard against a good team,” said coach Ladue.  “We had our chance but we turned it over too many times.”

In the first three quarters, Windsor was creating offense at will and were doing enough on defense to keep the Colonels at an arm’s length.

“I think overall we played a great game. You take out those few minutes and that’s our game. [Brattleboro] made the plays at the end,” said Ladue.

For Windsor, Slocum and Dakohta Sanderson each had 11 points, while Ryland Richardson added 10 points and some highlight-reel passes.

Brattleboro was led by 17 from Newton and got 14 points from Price.

Both teams now sit at 5-5 in their respective divisions.

“We’re back to .500 with some tough games ahead but they’re ready,” said Ladue.

Windsor will host Mill River on Wednesday night, while Brattleboro will travel to Burr and Burton on Tuesday night.
