The English department will offer a short introductory course on the Holocaust designed for middle school students next quarter. The focus of the quarter class will be on rescue and survivor stories. Some seventh-grade students will be given the opportunity to learn about this topic and create projects that show their learning as they explore the question, how does humanity show heroism and kindness even in the darkest of times?

Mrs. Caravaggio has taught a high school course on the Holocaust and other genocides for 10 years and currently serves as a fellow at Keene State’s Cohen Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies and is an Alfred C. Lerner fellow at Columbia University as a result of her work with the organization Jewish Foundation for the Righteous.

This next semester marks a shift of focus for the former Senior Honors English Seminar students. The students who selected to remain in the course will now focus on the Advanced Placement curriculum as they begin to prepare for the AP test in May. There will be an increased focus on literary analysis as they read many works and genres from different time periods and cultures.

Empty Bowls Project

The district-wide K-12 student art show at the Library Arts Center opens on March 29 from 4-6 p.m. The theme this year is “Kindness Matters.” The art department will hold a fundraiser for the Newport food pantry by selling student-decorated ceramic bowls and having an ice cream social during the art opening at which people may purchase a bowl of ice cream and keep the bowl.

Another follow-up event for a community soup dinner is being planned with the Library Arts Center, so stay tuned.

If any community member would like to help make bowls for students, faculty, and staff to decorate for the project, please come to the art room any Monday or Tuesday after school. You can also help glaze bowls once they are fired.

High school students may clock community service hours for this project. Every student in grades K-12 and all faculty and staff members are encouraged to make a bowl for donation to the Empty Bowl Project to help stop hunger in our community.

The Library Arts Center district-wide student show opens to the public at The Library Arts Center March 29 to April 17.

Olivia Twist by Lorie Landon

“Olivia Twist is an innovative re imagining of Charles Dickens’ classic tale Oliver Twist, in which Olivia was forced to live as a boy for her own safety until she was rescued from the streets. Olivia Brownlow is no damsel in distress. Born in a workhouse and raised as a boy among thieving London street gangs, she is as tough and cunning as they come.

When she is taken in by her uncle after a caper gone wrong, her life goes from fighting and stealing on the streets to lavish dinners and soirees as a debutante in high society. But she can’t seem to escape her past … or forget the teeming slums where children just like her still scrabble to survive.

Jack Macaroon rose from his place in London’s East End to become the adopted “nephew” of a society matron. Little does society know that Macaroon is a false name for a boy once known among London gangs as the Artful Dodger, and that he and his “aunt” are robbing them blind every chance they get. When Jack encounters Olivia Brownlow in places he least expects, his curiosity is piqued. Why is a society girl helping a bunch of homeless orphan thieves? Even more intriguing, why does she remind him so much of someone he once knew? Jack finds himself wondering if going legit and risking it all might be worth it for love. ”
