NEWPORT — Newport High School is in the market for a new head football coach.
School officials could not confirm if Dennis Borcuk Jr. will be returning for his second season in the fall but the position is currently available, according to an advertisement placed by the Newport School District.
Attempts to contact Borcuk were unsuccessful.
Newport Athletic Director Jeff Miller did not respond to two requests for information on the Borcuk situation.
“At this time, Jeff and I have no comment regarding this matter,” Newport High School Principal Shannon Martin wrote in response to an email request.
Superintendent of Schools Cindy Gallagher also said she could not comment on the Borcuk situation as it was a personnel matter. She did say, however, that the head coaching position would be posted on a web site and it was up on Sunday, Jan. 27.
The advertisement title was listed as Varsity Football Coach with the SAU 43 address.
Gallagher also said Newport would be advertising for a new high school baseball coach, a position held by Jon Hamel who is now the physical education director for Grades K-5 at Bradford Elementary School.
The advertisement for the football coach contained a long list of duties.
Some of those areas included promote a professional image of the Newport School District; keep an accurate, updated inventory of all equipment and supplies, prepare and file necessary reports in a timely fashion, assist Athletic Director in securing personnel for home games when requested; teach athletes good citizenship, proper behavior at practices, games and other appropriate times, as well as good sportsmanship; coordinate the preparation of the practice field and game field including but not limited to line markings, raking and dragging and maintain good communications with the Athletic Director, principal, fellow coaches, parents, and athletes.
The salary for the head coach at Newport, $4,124, is based on 12 percent of the starting salary for a first-year teacher, which is currently $34,363.
Before becoming Newport’s head football coach a year ago, Borcuk had several years of experience in various junior varsity and assistant coaching jobs with the program.
