NEWPORT — Three Newport High School seniors and two from Stevens High School have been selected to compete for openings in the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program.
They are Victoria Burroughs, Benjamin Jachim-Gallagher and Elizabeth Tremblay
Also selected were Kaitlyn Chambers and Karsten Kleyensteuber of Stevens High School .
At a meeting of the Newport School Board on Thursday, Jan. 24, high school principal Shannon Martin said 4,500 seniors from across the country were selected in the initial round.
The field of 4,500 will be narrowed down to 600 semifinalists. In April the 161 Presidential Scholars will be named. There were 84 New Hampshire students making the original list of 4,500.
Having three students on the list is a “huge recognition” Martin told the Newport School Board members.
Factors considered to be nominated for the Presidential Scholars Program honors include academic and artistic excellence with leadership at school and in the community.
