‘Do Plants Think?’ – OLLI Program

SPRINGFIELD, Vt. — Lincoln Earle-Centers will present the OLLI-Osher Lifelong Learning Institute program on Tuesday, Feb. 12. “Do Plants Think?” will be presented at 2 p.m. at the Nolin Murray Center next to St. Mary’s Catholic Church on Pleasant St. in Springfield, Vermont.

The postponed program “Life in the Fast Lane,” with Kelly Arrison has been rescheduled. Because of inclement weather on Jan. 29, you’ll be able to hear Kelly’s story of his professional auto racing career on Feb. 19.

On Tuesday, Feb. 12, you’ll hear from Lincoln Earle-Centers, an arborist, about what is happening in plant research to precipitate a mainstream fascination with plant ‘behavior’ or even ‘neurobiology?’ It turns out that plants are doing a lot more than most of us would ever consider. Hear from a lifelong student and observer who spends his days in the trees. Share his thoughts, research and observations about the kingdom of the plants that we live among.

As a father of three and business owner, Earle-Centers enjoys using some time in his off-season to research and engage with some subject of interest; and to get out and connect, and share ideas. He is an ISA Certified Arborist who climbs trees day-to-day to care for, preserve, or remove our silent, giant, sylvan neighbors.

This program is co-sponsored by the Springfield Garden Club.

OLLI-Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, affiliated with the University of Vermont, is a local membership program geared towards seniors 50 years and older who want to engage in meaningful learning, “just for the fun of it!” People of all ages who are interested in this type of program are welcome to attend.

The OLLI series programs are selected with input from the local members and carry varied themes from semester to semester including history, art, music, literature, health, nature, science, travel and current events.

Programs are held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday afternoons and last about an hour and a half.

Membership is $45 for the semester, which includes 9 programs. Non-members are encouraged and welcome to attend individual lectures for a single program fee of $8. Memberships, as well as single program fees, may be paid at the program.

The following OLLI program will be one week later on Feb. 19, and will be ‘Life in the Fast Lane’ with Kelly Arrison. Then one week after that on Feb. 26, Distinguished Professor of Folklore, Wolfgang Mieder, will present “Let Us Have Faith That Right Makes Might.” This will be an historical discussion about proverbial rhetoric in decisive moments of American politics.

Other programs this semester are sponsored by the Ascutney Mountain Audubon Society and local benefactor, Barbara Sanderson.

Brochures have been distributed throughout the area towns at businesses, the local libraries, town halls and Chamber of Commerce offices.
