NEWPORT —Fresh new artwork from around the region will be on display in the Library Arts Center’s gallery with the Juried Regional Exhibit opening Saturday, Feb. 9.
The Arts Center’s first exhibit of 2019 features recent works from New Hampshire and Vermont artists in a wide variety of mediums. The show will run from Feb. 9 to March 21, with an opening reception from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 15.
Work for the show was chosen by Stephanie Kyriazis, Chief of Interpretation at Saint Gaudens National Historic Site in Cornish, as well as Penny Whitman, Community and Economic Development Field Specialist, UNH Cooperative Extension. Kyriazis and Whitman have been serving with a Sullivan County cohort to bring Creative Placemaking to the county and region.
The function of Creative Placemaking is to bring economic and cultural development to a community through the arts. This work has been funded by a grant from the Americans for the Arts and the National Association of Counties through a two year grant including training and guidance while developing outcomes. The cohort includes members from different sectors of the community, as well as representation from key arts organizations in the county.
The jurors selected 62 pieces from 168 entries from 96 artists to hang in the exhibit. In addition to applying for the Juried Regional, the following artists elected to compete for an opportunity to display a larger body of their work at the Library Arts Center during the 2020 show season, and were selected by the jurors from more than 40 entries. The 2020 Selections winners are (listed alphabetically): Carol Corliss, Kate Emlen, Robert Frasier, Matthew Greenway, Aaron Kane, Michele Johnsen, Maundy Mitchell, and Alan Shulman.
