Looking Back

1992

NEWPORT—Playing without Chris Boyle who is on vacation and Craig Robertson who is injured, the Tigers had a “mental lapse” in the third quarter that saw an 11-point lead turn into a six-point deficit. The Tigers got an impressive performance from freshman Matt Meunier who scored 19 points.

SUNAPEE—Despite solid efforts from Wes Collins and Mike Sharkey with 14 and 13 points, respectively, the Lakers were not a match for Orford’s Mickey Geising who scored 28 points and hauled down 14 rebounds leading the Wildcats to a 70-54 victory over the Lakers.

CLAREMONT—Mo Frayler had a big first half for Stevens with three blocked shots and the teams only six points in the second quarter as the Cards flew by Springfield, 52-30, in a Connecticut Valle League girls game. Coach Gene Grumman was impressed with the newly installed 2-2-1 defense.

LANGDON — The offensive woes continued for the Fall Mountain girls basketball team as it dropped a 57-30 decision at Hartford. Amy Holbrook was the leading Wildcat scorer with eight points and five assists. Coach Toni McDougle lamented on the inconsistency of the club.

1987

NEWPORT—Wendy Bell led the Tigers to a 55-34 victory over Hopkinton with 17 points. Sue Feenstra added 13 and Lori Ducharme 10. Newport coach Rich Chambers found his club leading only 26-24 at halftime before the Tigers turned it on in the second half.

SUNAPEE—The Lakers couldn’t overcome Derryfield’s height advantage, despite 27 points from Beth Field and dropped a 50-42 verdict to the Cougars. Sandy Warren added nine points for Sunapee, one of just four Lakers to score in the game.

CLAREMONT—Robin Ingalls scored a game-high 20 points and hauled down 13 rebounds but her effort wasn’t enough as the Cards fell to Bellows Falls, 55-39. Stevens outplayed the Terriers in the second half but couldn’t overcome a 32-15first half deficit.

LANGDON—Wildcat Pam St. Pierre scored 15 points and assorted half-court and full-court defense by the Wildcats troubled Springfield as Fall Mountain breezed to a 56-39 victory. The 6-1 Wildcats got 11 points from Julie Kinney and 10 from Renee Biron.

1972

NEWPORT—Newport’s Dave Lantz, a sophomore at Middlebury College, is among four students at the school from New Hampshire who are trying out for spots on the 1972 U.S. Winter Olympic team. Others are Kurtis Kling of Laconia and John Guest and Bruce McLaughry of Hanover.

SUNAPEE—A 29-point third period powered the Lakers to a 80-50 victory over Weare. Sunapee placed four hoopsters in double figures as Dan Sherburne meshed 24, Kim Sorento 10, Paul Gallup 14 and Doug Sorento 10. Kim Sorento and Dennis Wiggins each pulled down16 rebounds.

CLAREMONT—A standing-room-only crowd jammed into the Stevens gym and they were rewarded as Stevens and Concord battled with the Cards coming out on top, 57-52. With the Cards leading, 54-52, Gordie Ranney canned three free throws to score the final points of the game and salt the tilt away for the Redbirds. Ray Hyman was the high scorer for the game with 20 points, many coming in crucial situations.

LANGDON—With Fall Mountain using 13 players and 12 of them scoring, the Wildcats had an easy time with Tilton-Northfield as the Cats came away with a 99-48 victory. It marked the 34th consecutive defeat for the Bears. Joey Nichols was the top point getter for the Wildcats with 20 points. Pat Aumand followed with 13, Gary Welch 12, and Henry Kohlhaas 11.
