Good schools = experienced teachers

Kenneth Dugas
Newport
To the editor,

The fastest way to improve Newport schools is very simple.

As a second year teacher, I am doing a much better job than I did last year. If I continue teaching, I will improve each year. The teacher I replaced had five years of experience.

The best part of teaching is making connections with the kids, helping them learn and grow. It isn’t easy to give that up by leaving. But the teachers I know who have left are now earning over $10,000 per year more than they were in Newport. Could you afford to pass up an increase like that?

Around 25 percent of Newport teachers have left each of the past two years. The fastest way to improve the Newport schools is to remove the reason experienced teachers are leaving. Vote YES on Article 4, which will bring Newport teacher salaries closer to those of other towns.
