CHARLESTOWN — On Thursday, March 7, 2019, Carroll R. Bashaw passed away at his home on the Old Claremont Road in Charlestown. where he resided for more than 55 years. Born in Charlestown, on March 22, 1938 to Ralph “Chippy” and Nina (Wilson) Bashaw, Carroll was a dedicated husband and father. He was well known and appreciated for his work ethic and considerable skill as a welder. He loved a challenge and was often able to fabricate parts that allowed him to make seemingly impossible repairs. He worked at various trades throughout his life from shoe factories, to woolen mills, sawmills and more than 20 years at Jones and Lamson in Springfield.
Carroll was a talented musician and was particularly known for his skill on the mandolin. Carroll also played the guitar and most recently he performed with the Charlestown Senior Citizen Center’s Silver Country Band. In years past, he regularly collaborated with friends and relatives to entertain at family gatherings and often played at local nursing homes. For a number of years Carroll played holiday songs in Charlestown Schools for groups of elementary school children that included his great grandchildren. Carroll rarely missed an opportunity to help a neighbor a friend, or a family member. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was loved and admired by many. Carroll was especially proud of his grandchildren Joe Town (Diane), Carolee Williams, Kevin Gage (Janet), Chip Bigelow, Teah Powers (Josh), and Kurstin Bashaw; and reveled in their talents and accomplishments.
He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather, beloved uncle, cousin and brother-in-law. Carroll is survived by his wife of two years, Carolyn Blake (Deyo) Bashaw formerly of Springfield, Vermont, his daughters, Dianne Bashaw and Donna Bashaw of Charlestown; his grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews and cousins, as well as daughter-in-law Kelly Bashaw, sister-in-law Janet Bashaw, and brother-in-law Roger Roys and his wife Bonnie. The children of his wife, Marshall, Wade and Randy Bennett, Susanna Gravel, and Samuel Colby also survive.
Carroll is predeceased by his parents; wife of 56 years, Patricia (Roys) Bashaw; son, Douglas Scott Bashaw; siblings Wayne “Sonny” and Raymond “Raymie” Bashaw, Eunice “Eunie” Blake and Genevieve “Bebe” Schroeder.
A celebration of life is planned for 10 a.m., Saturday, March 23 at the Assembly of God in Springfield, Vermont. An additional celebration hosted by Carroll’s family will be held at a later date.
