Cosmos open season with win over MR

SPRINGFIELD, Vt. – In their fourth season, the Springfield Cosmos unified basketball team came out ready to conquer Mill River after last year’s upset in the playoffs with a victory Tuesday, 30-27.

Throughout the contest, sophomores Paul Dana and Haley Gibbons led the cosmos in assists for their team. Consistent passes from the two was one of the key components to the win.

From the opening tip, senior Falisha Maly dominated. She led the Cosmos with eight points on the night, consistently hitting shots from the baseline. “Maly’s persistence and veteran experience was a key element in leading the team to a triumph over Mill River,” said coach Margaret Gultekin.

Senior Gavin Glidden and junior Alex Sanborn came in as second leading scorers, with six points each. Sanborn’s drives to the basket and Glidden’s put-backs would have Mill River and Springfield in a momentous battle up and down the court.

Senior Rachel Campbell and sophomore Jason Supry each added four points for Springfield. To start the second half, senior and first-time player Catherine Parsons started it off with a nice assist to Gibbons as rookie Patrick Toner kept up the pace with his teammates. Senior Hannah Anderson and sophomore Luke Machado assisted their team with a few rebounds each.

For Mill River, Ian Smith led the team with nine points, and Addison Czar had six points.

The Cosmos will be home again when they host Brattleboro at Dressler Gym on Wednesday, March 27 at 4 p.m.
