House votes to expand net metering limits

CONCORD — The House of Representatives voted 254-98 today to pass HB 365, relative to net energy metering limits for customer generators. The bill will now be referred to the Senate. Rep. Howard Moffett (D-Canterbury), prime sponsor of the legislation, released the following statement:

“Allowing cities, towns, and school districts to reduce energy costs by utilizing home-grown renewable energy is a no-brainer. Today’s vote to expand the availability of net metering from 1 megawatts to 5 megawatts will allow municipalities to benefit from reduced energy costs and alleviate the burden on property taxpayers.”

“Governor Sununu’s veto of this legislation last year was harmful to communities throughout New Hampshire. Cities including Dover, Franklin, Laconia, and Nashua all had renewable energy projects that would immediately benefit taxpayers in the works. Because of the Governor’s decision, those projects had to be scaled back or delayed.”

“Mayors across the state, town energy boards, selectmen and city councilors support HB 365 because they understand the energy reduction and taxpayer relief it can provide. I encourage Gov. Sununu to reconsider his opposition to this legislation, and enable our communities to make smart decisions that benefit everyone.”
