Animal rights and animal industries films to be screened at Keene Library

KEENE — The Keene Public Library will be presenting a film series on Animal Rights and Animal Industries, which will be of interest to anyone who eats. Through five documentaries, the series focuses on the interconnections between eating animals, animal welfare, environmental destruction, and human health.  The series begins on April 3 with a showing of “Food Inc.” a highly rated 2008 documentary by filmmaker Robert Kenner examines corruption in the American food industry and its long-term effects on consumer health and the environment. Other films in this series will be shown on April 24 (“The Ghosts in Our Machine”), May 1 (“Eating Animals,” based on the Jonathan Safran Foer book), May 8 (“Cowspiracy”), and May 29 (“Vegucated”).

This series comes at a critical time when the majority of people are concerned about global warming and how to slow it down and with the integrity of the industrial food system. The United Nations urges people to turn to plant-based diets as the only way to combat global warming, hunger, and starvation.

The animal-rights movement, once considered a fringe political cause, now claims millions of members and public-opinion polls showing growing popular support for animal welfare. This series offers an opportunity to find out more about the movement. A display presenting both sides of the debate will offer materials available for checkout. Members of Twin States Animal Liberation will be available to answer questions after each documentary. All films will be shown in the Keene Public Library’s Huntress Auditorium, starting at 7 p. m.

The series is co-sponsored by Keene Public Library and Twin States Animal Liberation, which works to end animal harm at the hands of humans.  It collaborates with animal rights and welfare organizations throughout New Hampshire and Vermont.
