CLAREMONT — We are very excited to announce that on Saturday, March 30 members of the Claremont Police Department, administrators from School Administrative Unit-6 and Stevens High School seniors from the class of 2019 will participate in a donkey basketball tournament at the Stevens Gymnasium! The event is being presented by Green Mountain Donkeyball of Danby, Vermont. Tip off for the first game will be at 6 p.m. The proceeds from this event will benefit Project Red and Blue, a collaborative summer program between the Claremont Middle School and the Claremont Police Department which is now in its fifth year.
Project Red and Blue is a summer leadership academy which is provided at no cost to the students, and is a developmentally-appropriate camp experience for middle school students. The mission of the camp is to promote academic excellence, build leadership skills, and foster community engagement. These principles are developed and honed through the three core components of the program: academic instruction, adventure and community service.
During the program, students participate in hands-on learning opportunities including group problem-solving, where they learn and apply real-world skills. One of the stated goals of this program is to help students understand that they are part of a global community, and that they have the power to positively influence and improve our community.
The Claremont Police Department wishes to thank our generous donors who have made this program possible the past five years! The activities in which the students participate have been funded by charitable donations of local businesses and individuals. Further, School Resource Officer Crystal Simonds has worked tirelessly to secure grant monies to help cover additional costs, and to create a memorable experience for the students.
Tickets for Donkeyball will be available at the door on Friday evening for $10 or can be secured in advance by contacting School Resource Officer Simonds. She can be reached at (603) 542-9538 or at her email at [email protected].
