CLAREMONT — The city council recognized a retiring city worker, a police captain, and proclaimed April Child Abuse Awareness Month at its Wednesday night meeting.
Mayor Charlene Lovett formally recognized and thanked city worker George “Larry” Miller for 20 years of service to the city. Miller began working for Claremont on June 7, 1999 as a laborer. He graduated to truck driver, then to heavy-equipment operator, and accumulated numerous certificates over the years as he availed himself of opportunities for continuing education.
Lovett said Miller was also valued for his “calm demeanor, delightful personality, and great wit.”
Councilor Scott Pope added his personal thanks to Miller for his service to the community. “I’ll see him at Marro’s Hardware,” he said.
The council also recognized Police Captain Brent Wilmot, who graduated from FBI Academy March 15.
Claremont Police Chief Mark Chase said, “I’m very proud of him and I’m glad he went. I’m happy he’s back.”
Wilmot said, “It may sound funny to some people, but this is my dream job. I’m privileged to work with people who have given me the time to go down there [to the academy] and thankful to my family for letting me leave for 10 weeks during the winter.”
Mayor Lovett also congratulated Evelyn Cormier, who has risen to the ranks of finalists in the “American Idol” talent competition. Cormier is one of 16 finalists at this point.
Claremont has been chosen as the site for this year’s Special Olympics Regional Meet, which will be Saturday, May 4. Volunteers are needed for the day, and should contact Parks and Recreation Director Mark Brislin to help.
TLC Family Resources Director Maggie Cassel accepted Mayor Lovett’s Proclamation of April as Child Abuse Awareness Month and thanks the city for its efforts to combat child abuse.
TCL will be screening two films in April pertinent to the month. On April 16 “Screenagers; Growing Up in a Digital Age” will be shown at Stevens High School Auditorium from 6:30- 8:30 p.m. On April 18, “No Small Matter” about the need to invest in affordable day care and child development will be shown at the Recovery Center, 1 Pleasant St. 6 to 7:30 p.m.
