CLAREMONT — The Claremont Farmers Market will reopen May 25, back at its Broad Street Park location.
The Claremont Farmers Market Association (CFMA), which handed over control of the market to the city a little over a year ago, was begun in 2004 by five women: Cindy Porter, Elizabeth Draper, Kathleen Connair, Marilyn Nagy, and Ruth Preston. CFMA will be donating some commemorative benches to the city in honor of these five women.
“From 2004 to 2014 a rotating group of volunteers showed up every week making the market happen,” said Terry Gould of the CFMA. “It succeeded; it’s still there.”
Gould said CFMA has “sat quietly on the sidelines to make sure the market continued” and is pleased by the job the city’s doing. “It’s succeeded; it’s still there.”
He also praised Mascoma Savings Bank, which helped sponsor the market when it was struggling.
CFMA is donating the benches to help commemorate the hard work done “by so many people,” said Gould.
Gould gave the nod to the friends and volunteers who pitch in to make the market happen, including people who rake the park before the market, and an unnamed woman who hauls trash cans full of garbage after the market ends.
Vendor and volunteers are still being sought to help out at the market. Interested parties can contact CFMA through their Facebook page.
