What is the cost of cigarette smoking?

To the editor,

I am dying in a nursing home. I am 80. I have COPD. I smoked unfiltered cigarettes for 42 years (over 16,000).

If you smoke today, you spend $8 per pack; $56 per week; $225 per month; $2,700 per year. If cigarettes stayed a $8 per pack, how much would you spend if smoked for 42 years like I did? $27,000 in 10 years.
