ST. JOHNSBURY, Vt. – The Fall Mountain Fire 9th-10th grade girls AAU basketball team, coached by Scott Bardis, competed in the high school division along with eight other teams at Zero Gravity VT States this past weekend.
FM came out on top, beating the North Country Lady Warriors 62-48 in the title game.
“This tradition in recent years has become almost as popular as the State’s beloved Ben & Jerry’s Ice cream,” according zerogravitybasketball.com. “Every single year the best teams in the Green Mountain State get together and compete for the coveted Zero Gravity State Title.”
FM played and beat three teams to make it to the championship: the Barre Swish 53-23, the Vermont Breeze 56-35 and the Green Mountain Raptors 53-24.
Fire had a lot of variety on offense throughout the tournament between the inside game of Angelina Nardillo, Hillary Berry and Erin Brady working underneath and some good guard play from Avery Stewart, Sophie Bardis, Audrey Martin, Makenna Grillone and Morgan Beauregard who were attacking on fast breaks and hitting shots from the outside.
The Galaxy Girls, a team from the White River area, also won their three games, but FM had them outnumbered in the points differential, so they got the chance to compete for the title.
Past champions of the tournament include Barre Swish, Central VT U, OC Challengers, Brattleboro Mallers, Twin State Lady Panthers, and Champlain Raiders. This event is a ZG Major Event and is part of the Zero Gravity Grand Slam Tour. Winners of this event earn a spot at the Prestigious Zero Gravity National Finals in June.
