WINDSOR, Vt. – A scoreless game until the bottom of the fifth, Windsor rallied to beat Springfield 4-1 on Tuesday evening behind a big hit from senior Justin Smith, and a gem of a performance on the mound by senior Robert Slocum.
“We had two senior captains really step up today in Robert and Justin,” said Windsor head coach Jamie Richardson. “Robert was a bulldog today… going right after hitters, and Justin with that key 2-RBI double.”
With the game tied at zero with one out in the top of the fifth, and with Sam Presch just coming in to replace Brady Clark on the mound for the Cosmos, Smith’s line-drive double scored Caleb Meagher and Dan Cardillo to put the Yellow Jackets up 2-0.
Two batters later, Dylan Hodgdon grounded out, scoring Smith on the play, putting Windsor up by three.
In the top of the sixth, Springfield tried to mount a comeback now that they had been awakened. Dylan Merrow scored on a Clark single to left field, but that’s the only momentum they could manage.
In the bottom-half of the sixth, Windsor sophomore Jordan Place had an RBI single that scored Josh Gaudette, bringing the game to its final 4-1 score.
In the top of the seventh, the Cosmos only managed one baserunner with an Adam Stokarski single.
On the hill for Windsor, Slocum went all 7 innings, allowing 4 hits, 2 walks, 1 earned run, while striking out 12 batters.
For Springfield, Clark pitched 4 1/3, allowing 2 earned runs and 10 walks while striking out 8. Presch pitched 1 2/3, allowing 3 hits, 1 earned run, 1 walk and 1 strikeout.
On offense for Windsor, Smith was 1-for-3 with 2 RBIs. Hodgdon had an RBI and 2 walks. Cardillo had 4 walks and a run.
For the Cosmos, Clark was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Merrow and Stokarski each added a hit.
“I’ve got to tip my cap to Brady Clark and Springfield,” said coach Richardson following the win. “Brady really battled on the mound, as did the whole Springfield squad. That’s a program on the rise.”
Windsor will host Woodstock on Saturday at 1 p.m. Springfield hosts Fair Haven on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
