Little Girl, 2, shot in leg

NEWPORT — A Newport man has been charged with two Class B felonies following a shooting incident at his 147 Laurel St. residence in Newport at 11:27 p.m. Sunday

Timothy E. Hale, 51, has been charged with reckless conduct with a deadly weapon and second-degree assault. Both counts carry potential state prison sentences of 3 1/2 to 7 years and a maximum fine of $4,000.

According to an incident report from the Newport Police Department, it is alleged that Hale had discharged a single 12 gauge shotgun round from his downstairs apartment that went through his ceiling into Apartment B striking a 2-year girl in the right leg. She had been lying on the floor at the time, according to the police report.

The girl was transported by Newport Ambulance to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon and was listed in stable condition on Monday.

Hale was taken into custody following the incident and was held at the Sullivan County Jail until his arraignment where he pleaded innocent to both charges.

Hale pleaded innocent and was released on personal recognizance. The conditions were subject to Hale residing at a specific location in Georges Mills, not travel outside New Hampshire and shall not possess a firearm, destructive device, dangerous weapon or ammunition, that he not consume excessive amounts of alcohol or use any narcotic drug or controlled substance as defined by RSA 318-B.

Sullivan County Deputy Attorney asked that Hale be detained until his trial.
