WINDSOR, Vt. – Windsor rallied to put together nine runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to propel them to a 15-7 win over Thetford in D-III baseball Tuesday at MacLeay-Royce Field.
Before that bottom-half of the sixth, the Yellow Jackets were down 7-6 and on the verge of letting a winnable game slip away.
Thetford scored a pair of runs in the top of the fifth to take a 6-3 lead as some throwing errors and miscues on defense started to ail the Jacks, who had seven errors on the day.
But, Windsor came up with big hits in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at 6, including a base knock from Jordan Place and a 2-RBI single down the right field line by Caleb Meagher.
After Thetford added a run in the top of the sixth, all nine of Windsor’s runs in the bottom half came with two outs.
“We weren’t as sharp as we can be in the field but we made a few plays when we had to and stayed in the game up until the sixth,” said Windsor head coach Jamie Richardson. “It was a wild game. I’m just glad our guys stayed together and we got the win.”
Windsor’s first six runs of the inning came off of five walks and a hit-by-pitch. Then, leading 12-7, Robert Slocum stepped into the batter’s box and delivered the knockout punch. He doubled on a line-drive to left field, scoring three Yellow Jacket runs.
Slocum was also on the mound for Windsor, pitching a complete game. He allowed 6 hits, 1 earned run, 1 walk, and struck out 5.
At the plate, Slocum was 4-for-4 with 4 RBIs, 2 runs and a walk.
“Robert again hung tough and came to play both offensively and on the mound today,” said coach Richardson.
Josh Gaudette went 2-for-2 with 2 runs, an RBI and 2 walks. Dan Cardillo led Windsor with 3 runs scored from his lead-off spot. Meagher had 3 RBIs and Place added 2 RBIs.
Thetford centerfielder Alex Emerson had a big assist in the bottom of the fourth, gunning down Justin Smith who was trying to score from second on a Slocum single up the middle. The tag-out at the plate ended the inning with Thetford on top 4-3.
For the visitors, who were playing in their first game of the spring, Alden Nichols and Dylan Kuban pitched three innings each, combining to walk ten batters.
Windsor improves to 3-1 this season and will be home again on Thursday welcoming Otter Valley.
