SPRINGFIELD, Vt. — The settlement agreement between the Town of Springfield and former Chief of Police Doug Johnston may have been accepted by Johnston.
A figure purporting to be the agreed amount of payment to Johnston was published in the Valley News. However, select board chair Kristi Morris told the Eagle Times that it was his impression was the settlement amount could not be released until after Johnston had signed off on the agreement, and the seven-day revocation period had expired.
Morris declined to release details of the settlement, citing advice of counsel.
Town Manager Tom Yennerell agreed with Morris that details should be released after Johnston signed the agreement.
The select board signed off on the settlement at its April 22 meeting. Morris stated at that time that neither defendant concedes wrongdoing or liability in the settlement. The case is being settled “to avoid protracted legal expenses,” said Yenerell.
