UNITY — Deputy Jeremy Wilson of the Sullivan County Sheriff’s office visited the Unity select board Monday, giving a brief update of the department’s work over the previous 10 weeks.
The department got an average of 60 calls a month, according to Wilson, including 23 car stops and 10 motor vehicle accidents. A missing person was located, and the deputies responded to a few untimely deaths.
“We had one walk-away from the jail,” said Wilson. “The person was captured and returned.”
A mailbox on West Unity Road exploded Friday between 7 and 8 p.m., which called for a response from the state police. Tampering with mail is a federal crime, but sheriffs were not saying whether there was mail in the box at the time.
They also answered a report of shots fired on Second New Hampshire Turnpike, but Wilson said most calls were typical service calls of people needing help with something.
After Wilson’s report the select board moved quickly on with town business. They approved the minutes of three previous meetings and heard from Tim Davis of the fire department.
The department has 11 active members. “You’re doing very well,” said John Callum. “If we have 11 or 12 firefighters in a town this population, we’re way ahead. Towns down east with a lot more population have a lot less people.”
