Stevens 7, Kearsarge 4
CLAREMONT – The Cardinals scored three runs in the second inning capitalizing on a couple Cougars’ mistakes, and that proved to be the difference in an otherwise back-and-forth game.
Despite Kearsarge out-hitting Stevens 6-5, the Cardinals’ bats came through at the right times. For the Cardinals, Gabe Miller was 2-for-2 on the day with a single and a double, 2 RBIs, a walk, and a run scored.
“I’m happy for Gabe,” said Stevens head coach Paul Silva. “He had some big hits for us… their pitcher (Gabe Benedict) threw the ball well and shut down the middle of our lineup so we needed a spark. Gabe came up huge with those big RBIs.”
Benedict had 11 strikeouts and 5 walks for the Cougars on the mound Monday. For Stevens, Ethan Johnson went all seven innings, striking out 7 and walking 4 to earn the win.
“I thought Ethan did a real nice job,” said Silva on his pitcher. “Battling for seven innings, he made so many big pitches when he needed to.”
Johnson also had a good day at the dish from his two-spot in the batting order, going 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.
The Cardinals picked up their third win of the season as they improve to 3-5. They will play a doubleheader against Newport on Friday.
For Kearsarge, Benedict was 2-for-3 at the plate and scored 3 runs. Noah Gray was also 2-for-3, with 2 RBIs and a run scored. The Cougars fall to 1-6 and will host Lebanon on Wednesday.
