BELLOWS FALLS, Vt. – Rural postal carriers will be conducting their 27th annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive Saturday, May 11, when they ask the folks on their routes to leave bags of non-perishable items by their mail boxes.
The bags will be collected by the carriers and dropped off at Our Place Drop-in Center as the carriers return from their rounds.
“The drive is especially important to us at this time of year as schools let out and children don’t have access to subsidized school lunch programs,” said OP Director Lisa Pitcher. “This is the largest one-day food drive in the nation, and we certainly appreciate the carriers’ efforts.”
Stamp Out Hunger is a program of the National Association of Letter Carriers. Last year, the drive collected 70 million pounds of food. Since it began in 1993, it has collected almost 1.6 billion pounds of food in 10,000 cities and towns in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and Guam.
Our Place is a daytime shelter and food pantry located at 4 Island Street whose mission is to offer help with food and other essential needs in a non-judgmental, safe and respectful atmosphere. It serves families in the greater Rockingham and surrounding areas, as well as Walpole and North Walpole, N.H.
