Houghlene Wallace

COURTESY
CLAREMONT — Mrs. Houghlene (Lucy) Wallace, age 87, formerly of Claremont passed away peacefully at her home in St. Cloud, Florida on Thursday, May 16, 2019.

Lucy was born in Unity on Dec. 24, 1931 to William Champagne and Lena Valley Champagne. She is survived by her husband of 69 years John Wallace; daughter Barbara Cooper Bey and her husband Andre of St. Cloud, Florida, daughter Terry Wallace and her partner Debra Bell of St. Cloud, Florida, daughter Janet Osgood and her husband Kurt Osgood of Unity, son John Wallace of Pittsfield, Massachusetts, son Barry Wallace and his wife Lisa of St, Cloud, Florida, and son James Wallace and his wife Dina of St. Cloud, Florida; 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

She was never afraid to take a risk, because “you can’t know unless you try” and loved immensely by her family for her strength and uniqueness. She prided herself in being a hard worker, being an honest person, and always doing the right thing. She found joy in the simplest of pleasures: her Sunday rides ending with a hamburger and an ice cream, watching sci-fi next to her favorite character Groot, and laughing so hard at her own jokes that inevitably you found them funny as well.

After her retirement, she developed a passion for hiking, finding a sense of accomplishment as much as she found a piece of herself. Although she explored most of the trails throughout southern Vermont and New Hampshire, no place meant as much to her as Mount Tom in Woodstock Vermont. Her favorite path was “the criss-cross trail,” winding its way to the top where she would sit and reflect on the beauty she was a part of. Looking out over the village, past the green mountains, the Connecticut River and onto the horizon, a place where she wanted to be for all of eternity.

Visiting hours will be on Wednesday evening, June 5 at the Stringer Funeral Home, 146 Broad Street in Claremont from 6-8 p.m. A prayer service will be held on Thursday morning, June 6 at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at the West Claremont Burying Grounds.
