House-passed independent redistricting legislation clears Senate

CONCORD — The Senate unanimously voted today to pass HB 706, establishing an independent redistricting commission. Rep. Marjorie Smith (D-Durham), prime sponsor of the legislation, released the following statement:

“Public trust of the election process is at the core of our democracy. Removing partisan politics from the redistricting process assures that voters will pick their politicians, not the other way around. Elections should be won and lost on ideas and values, not gerrymandered districts, and I thank the Senate for its unanimous, bipartisan vote today in support of fair elections.”
