#7 Sunapee 8, #10 Newmarket 3
SUNAPEE – The Lakers advance to the quarterfinal round after an 8-3 win over the Mules on Wednesday in the D-IV softball playoffs.
For the Lakers, Elizabeth Bennett was 3-for-4 with 2 runs and 2 RBIs. Miah Hamm had a double and 2 RBIs. Ellie Frederick was 2-for-4 with 2 runs. Tess Palin had an RBI. Erin Moynihan was 2-for-4 and had some outstanding catches in the outfield.
“This was the best I’ve seen them play together as a team,” said Sunapee head coach Bonnie Cruz. “We played big defensively and hit the ball well.
Hannah Cooney pitched for the Lakers, going all 7, striking out 5, walking 1 and allowing 2 hits. All 3 runs were unearned.
Sunapee will travel to Wilton on Saturday to take on No. 2 Wilton-Lyndeborough.
The Lakers have seen Wilton twice this year, losing the first game 17-5 and losing the second one 9-8.
#4 John Stark 7, #13 Stevens 0
WEARE – Izzy Nelson controlled the game from the mound for John Stark, striking out 10 in Wednesday’s opening round D-II playoff game.
Madison Lapsley pitched a great game for Stevens in her final outing as a Cardinal.
The Cardinals got hits from Tanner Brown and Makayla Maccioli.
Stevens’ outfield of Ashlyn Marsh, Ellee Grenier and Gabby Labounty covered the gaps, combining for 8 putouts on the day.
The Cardinals say goodbye to six seniors: Kaitlyn Chambers, Madison Lapsley, Jenna Pond, Ameila Parizo, Ryann Rider and Madeline Ferland, who all represented Stevens in an outstanding fashion.
#6 Windsor 14, #11 Thetford 5
WINDSOR, Vt. – Peyton Richardson threw all 7 innings for the Jacks in the opening-round win, striking out 3 and allowing just 5 hits and 2 walks.
Offensively, Windsor jumped out to a 6-0 lead after the first and added 4 more in the third. They then tacked on 2 more in the fourth and fifth.
The Jacks’ leaders on the day were Richardson, going 3-for-4 with a double and 2 RBIs, and Angel Sutton and Kristin Clark each went 2-for-33 with an RBI.
#8 Monadnock 14, #9 Newport 2
SWANZEY – The Tigers’ season comes to a close with the loss on the road on Wednesday.
For Newport, Alicia Urista led the way with two hits, while Jenna Maheu, Shelby Adams, Libby Tremblay and Kelsey Wheeler all added a hit. The hit for Shelby Adams was a home run.
The loss comes just five days after losing to Monadnock by just one run on the road, 4-3.
The Huskies scattered 16 hits on 37 at-bats to score their 14 runs.
Newport had a regular season record of 10-6, including a stretch of winning 8 out of 9 games in the middle of their season.
#3 White Mountains 7, #14 Fall Mountain 0
WHITEFIELD – White Mtns. scored 4 runs in the first three innings on 4 errors.
“White Mountains have been in the finals the last seven years, so they are a solid program,” said FM head coach Kevin Hicks. “We played well at times. The White Mountain Pitcher is the best we have seen so far.”
Haile Hicks for White Mountains had 17 strikeouts.
FM’s Chloe Vogel struck out 5 and allowed 7 hits.
FM had 2 hits: Savana Wilson and Stella Boucher had a bunt single.
The Wildcats finish the year 8-12.
BASEBALL
#8 Bellows Falls 4, #9 Hartford 2
WESTMINSTER, Vt. – BF baseball moves onto the second round after beating Hartford by two runs at home Wednesday.
Hartford scored a run in the top of the first but Bellows Falls had an answer in the bottom half to tie the game at one apiece as Elliott Graham knocked in Jack Buke.
The Terriers then rallied for three runs in the fourth on 1 hit, 2 RBI walks, and a wild pitch.
Hartford scored a run in the seventh and the game ended with Hurricane runners on second and third.
GIRLS TENNIS
#4 Montpelier 7, #5 Bellows Falls 0
MONTPELIER – The No. 4 Solons did not drop a set all afternoon while ousting the No. 5 Terriers during Wednesday’s Division II quarterfinal.
“The girls were dialed in and focused today,” MHS coach Richard Bashara said. “We had a couple of nice practices and they brought it to the court. Meredith Stetter set the tone by playing her best tennis of the season at No. 3 singles. She was patient and precise, hitting to all parts of the court to keep her opponent on the run.”
Bella Luhr, Isabelle Boutin and Lily Gingold also won contested singles matches. Teammate Dominique Savard prevailed by forfeit at the No. 5 spot.
“Bella showed great poise and confidence,” Bashara said. “She has been working on hitting deeper into the court and taking advantage of a short return. It’s very hard to take it from practice to the court, but Bella did it today. And both Isabelle and Lily kept there composure and were on top of their games too.”
Christie Cecere and Dapne Lassner only lost one game during their No. 1 doubles match. Fellow Solons Elizabeth Cossett and Evie Caserta dropped two games at the No. 2 position.
“The doubles teams are really coming together,” Bashara said. “Daphne and Christie have been putting in the work and have improved so much. And Elizabeth and Evie are a nice, strong No. 2 doubles team. They are seniors and you can tell how much they love being out there. They are fun to watch.”
Montpelier (4-5) will travel to play No. 1 Woodstock (12-0) at 3 p.m. Friday. The Solons suffered a 4-3 loss against the two-time defending champions during their second match of the season.
