NEWPORT — The Sullivan County Commissioners honored two employees of the Sullivan County Department of Corrections at their meeting Monday afternoon.
Cassandra Abare Hoyt was recognized for her continued support to the offender population dealing with substance abuse and mental illness. “Her work ethics continue to inspire her coworkers,” said Superintendent Dave Barry.
Officer Peter Mahair was presented a life saving medal for his fast actions in saving the life of an inmate at the Sullivan County Department of Corrections.
On April 17, shortly after 6 p.m., Mahair was posted in the male Community Corrections Center control monitoring cameras when he heard a banging on the male wing CCC 159E door.
Mahair responded to the unit and was informed by two offenders that a male was attempting to hang himself in the bathroom. Mahair radioed for assistance and responded to the bathroom.
By the time staff arrived, Officer Mahair had untied the knot and was monitoring the offender’s condition. The man was stable and was transported to Valley Regional Hospital where he was later cleared and returned to medical observation.
Barry presented Mahair with the life saving medal for his fast actions.
At the next Commissioners meeting in Unity the two males who alerted Mahair of the incident will be recognized as their fast actions clearly helped to save a life, Barry stated.
