Senate passes legislation to restore voting rights

CONCORD — The New Hampshire Senate voted 14-10 today to pass HB 106, which restores the definition of “resident” which existed prior to passage of HB 1264 in 2018. The bill now goes to the Governor’s desk. House Majority Leader Doug Ley (D-Jaffrey) released the following statement:

“This bill reverses legislation passed last term that forces some voters to pay post-election poll taxes simply for exercising their Constitutional right to vote. Among the core tenets of American democracy is the notion that voters pick their politicians, not the other way around. Legislation passed last term threatened that principle by targeting certain classes of voters with roadblocks that discourage them from exercising their right to vote.”

“This bill restores equal voting rights to everyone domiciled in New Hampshire, assuring that voters will continue to pick their politicians. The House’s vote today restores integrity to our election process and makes clear that all eligible voters are treated equally.”
