Kids Fishing in Stoughton Pond today

WEATHERSFIELD, Vt. — Weathersfield Proctor Library Director Mark Richardson said that registered spots are already filled for the town’s Kids Fishing Event today, though the number of sign-ups is strong indication that the town can consider more future fishing events.

“We wanted to see if there would be enough attendance to do this again next year,” Richardson said. “Based on registration it looks like we will.”

Fifty children signed up for the town’s free fishing event, sponsored by the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department, Tillman’s Bait Shop in Ascutney, the Windsor High School Bass Fishing Team and Weathersfield Parks and Recreation. The event, though closed for registration now, is free for children ages 14 and under, and features a number of educational workshops and fishing prizes in three age categories for biggest fish; smallest fish; first fish caught; and most total weight of fish caught.

The state of Vermont sponsored the kids fishing day to educate children about fishing and encourage children to engage in outdoor activities. The state stocked Stoughton Pond with additional 8 to 10 inch trout for the event.

High school fishing team students will run learning stations where youth can learn to tie fishing knots, bait hooks, cast, identify fish and read a river and pond, Richardson said.

Mike Tillman, owner of Tillman’s Bait Shop and coach of the high school fishing team, will provide all bait for the event free of charge.

Youth must bring their own poles, tackle, bucket and fish stringer.

“There has been quite a bit of enthusiasm for the event,” Richardson said. “I’m looking forward to seeing kids spending time outside.”

Annual book sale tomorrow

Tomorrow is the library’s annual Book, Bake and Yard Sale, sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

The sale runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the library, 5181 Route 5 in Ascutney.

Richardson said the sale raises funds for library speakers, children’s events and other public interests.

“We get donations from everywhere,” Richardson said. “We probably have around a couple of thousand books.”
