SPRINGFIELD, Vt. — The UU Meetinghouse Book Group will meet the second Sunday in July and in August from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. We’re reading two books this summer. Our first book for discussion is, “How to Change Your Mind: What the New Science of Psychedelics Teaches Us about Consciousness, Dying, Addition, Depression and Transcendence.” by Michael Pollan. On July 14, we’ll be discussing the prologue and chapters 1-3; on Aug. 11 chapters 4-6 and the epilogue.
Our second book is, “March (Book One)” by John Lewis. Lewis was a contemporary of ML King, a freedom rider, chairperson of SNCC, and a powerful force in the civil rights movement. This book is an engaging and informative exploration of his experiences. It’s perfect for summer reading and for our “Art Will Save Us “ theme, because it’s a graphic novel (cartoons!). It’s a quick read, an hour or less. We’re doing this as a collaboration with the Springfield Library as part of the Vermont Reads Program. Copies of the book have already arrived and are available for loan right at our Meetinghouse (as well as the library. We’ll be doing a play based on the novel at our second annual potluck and campfire at Tree Farm Campground on Sunday, Aug. 4 from 5-9. Contact [email protected] for more information.
Other books we’re considering for the fall and next year are: “Younger Next Year” by Crowley and Lodge; “Becoming” by Michelle Obama; “Hillbilly Elegy” by J.D. Vance and “Strangers in Their Own Land” by Arlie Russell Hochschild. Co-facilitators of the group are Pam Kilberg and Rev. Mellen Kennedy. Held at the Springfield UU Meetinghouse, 21 Fairground Road, Springfield, Vermont.
