NEWPORT — On Monday July 1st at approximately 11:35 a.m. the Newport Emergency Communications Center received a 911 call advising of a domestic violence incident at 105 Springfield Road.
It was reported that a man had fired rounds from a handgun at a woman who then fled the residence while being fired upon. Newport Police, Newport Ambulance and Sunapee Police responded and quickly secured the scene.
The investigation revealed that the incident was between a paid residential caregiver and an elderly male.
The investigation has revealed and it is alleged that Kenneth Rickard, 80, of Newport,
had fired multiple rounds from a handgun at the caregiver. The victim was able to run from the scene unharmed and was able to flag down a passerby for assistance. Rickard was taken into custody without incident and the firearm that he is alleged to have used was also recovered.
Rickard was charged with Reckless Conduct with a deadly weapon, a class B Felony. Rickard was held at the Sullivan County House of Corrections pending his arraignment at the 5th Circuit Court, Newport on Tuesday. At his arraignment, Rickard was held without bail.
The incident remains under investigation and additional charges are expected. The Newport Police Department are seeking anyone who may have been in the area to share what they may have witnessed or overheard and are asked to call Lt. Charles Rataj at 863-3240.
