Newport Senior Center Week of July 3

By BRENDA BURNS
NEWPORT — Now that summer is here, we know everyone is busy with friends, family and special gatherings, so we want you to be able to plan ahead for some of our informative and fun upcoming events.

On July 15, crafts will be available. Come make your own mesh wreath at 9 a.m. This craft is an easy project to do and the supplies needed to create your masterpiece are listed in the July newsletter and sample supplies are on the front desk. Participants are responsible for obtaining their own supplies in order to create colors and designs that are specific to each individual’s desires.

Another activity favorite is the casino trips and another casino trip is in the making. A trip is being planned for July 21. If this is something you want to do, be sure to book your reservation very soon because these trips fill up quickly.

The cost of the trip is $50 for non-members and $55 for non-members. Price includes $15 meal and slot voucher. The bus will leave the center at 6 a.m., pick-up at Wal-Mart for 6:15 a.m. and then head to Mohegan for a fun and exciting day. The bus will leave Mohegan at 5 p.m. sharp. If you would like to reserve your seat, call 863-4422.

The next scheduled event to mark your calendar for is July 29 at 10:30 a.m. SCNS, the Newport Senior Center, the Alzheimer’s Association, Summercrest and the Newport Police Department have come together to discuss a very tough topic but one that impacts many families, Dementia or Alzheimer’s and home safety.

When someone is diagnosed with Dementia or Alzheimer’s, the disease causes a number of changes in the brain and body that may affect safety. Depending on the stage of the disease, judgment, sense of time, behavior, physical ability and senses can be affected.

Plan to join us in a panel discussion to talk about the affects dementia or Alzheimer’s has on a loved one and how family members can help create a safe home for everyone involved. Some of the topics will include dangers of stove top and cooking, sinks and flooding, firearm safety, safety traveling and financial safety.
