MONTPELIER, Vt. — With millions of motorists expected on the roadways this July 4 to join in the celebration of the birth of our nation, the Vermont Agency of Transportation urges travelers to stay safe as they take to the state’s highways.
“At this beautiful time of year in our Green Mountain State, we look forward to celebrating Independence Day this week. We need motorists to pay attention while behind the wheel,” said Transportation Secretary Joe Flynn. “There are more distractions than ever these days, and we want everyone who travels on Vermont’s highways to arrive at their destination safely.”
A record-breaking 46.9 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more away from home this Independence Day, according to the American Automobile Association (AAA). That is a 5% increase over last year and the highest number since AAA started tracking July 4 travel 18 years ago.
AOT wishes to remind drivers of the dangers of impaired driving, distracted driving, and driving too fast. The Agency encourages motorists to make good choices, plan ahead, and, whether driving or hosting a party, remember to think ahead and have a designated driver or be one yourself for friends.
Although the number of fatal crashes in Vermont has been on the decline year-to-date, and Vermont is among the safest states in the country, one fatal crash is one too many. AOT wishes all Vermonters and visitors to celebrate our great country and do so safely.
