SPRINGFIELD, Vt. — After two races, the Springfield Race Series’ competition is heating up.

After the Dam Run and the Lace Up for Laura events, over 500 people have participated in a road race this year in the Springfield. The two races have created some heated contests among division winners vying for the title of fastest in town.

Here is a brief recap of how the Springfield Race Series works: participants will earn five points for completing each race as well points for placing in the top-10 within their five year age group. For example if you participated in both the Dam Run and the Lace up for Laura events and placed 1st in your age group you would have 30 points; if you placed 5th in your age group you would have 20 points.

After the two races here are the top point earners and their age groups: The 14-and-under group has two cousins vying for first in the men’s category with Zed and Isaac Mcnaughton at the top with 29 and 25 points respectively. In the women 14-and-under category it’s a tight race between Myra McNaughton (30 points), Bizzy Tindall (24), and Amelia Murchie (23). Only two participants have completed both events and placed first in their age group earning a perfect 30 points, Myra Mcnaughton and Kyle Weeks who has led the male 20-24 age group both races. We have a few runners earning 29-points: Jim Fog (40-44 age group), Jillian Trip (35-39 age group), Paige Condon (15-19 age group), John Blais (50-54 age group), and Scott Peterson (55-59). It seems the most competitive group is the age bracket in Men’s 55-59 with Peterson at 29 points, Joe Cerniglia with 27 points, and Joe Coutermarsh with 25 points. The women’s 50-54 age group is also tight with Sarah Moulton at the top with 28 points and Sharon Snide with 24. There is another interesting race brewing in the women’s 25-29 age group with Sarah Flore leading Kristen Bruso 28-26 in points. A few other impressive performances include Nancy Bladyka with 24 points in the Women’s 65 and up bracket and Erica Blais with 27 points in the women’s 45-49 bracket.

There is still two opportunities to add to your points total or take over the lead, here are the last two races in the series:

The Booster Dash 5K—Saturday, August 3rd at 9:00am. This is a fun flat course race that is designed to bring community members together while recognizing the importance of healthy living and exercise. The Dash is an event sponsored by the Springfield Booster Club and embodies the cornerstones of their work: collaboration, revitalization and community spirit. The course begins at the Jones Center parking area and travels the Tonnerville Trail out and back along the beautiful Black River.

These funds are going to be used specifically to increase the equipment available in the Cosmos Closet. The Cosmos Closet is a place where Springfield’s student athletes can obtain the necessary equipment to participate in sports safely. The Booster Club has gently used equipment but also retains funding for items that need to be purchased new or specific for a student. The Booster Club takes pride in making sure that any barriers that might eliminate a student from being part of Cosmos athletics are torn down.

The EdgarMay Thanksgiving Day 5k is held annually prior to the meal where Americans consume the most amount of food. This race is the perfect way to start your Turkey day morning by burning off a few calories with friends and family. The 3.1 mile course starts at Springfield Hospital and travels to Springfield High School and back for flat, fast course. Come dressed in a costume or with a large group of family and friends and you might receive one of the many fun prizes given away each year. This event is held on Thanksgiving morning at 9 a.m. so you are home in plenty of time your meal.

Proceeds for this event benefit the Edgar May Health and Recreation Center’s Annual Fund. www. http://www.myreccenter.org/thanksgiving-day-5k.org/thanksgivingday
