The Friendly Visitor and Vet-2-Vet Visitor Programs are busy filling a much-needed service. We currently have 8-10 new requests for visitors. The positive effect of connecting with another person and creating a friendly bond cannot be overestimated. Both visitor and friend gain physical and mental benefits through sharing stories and hobbies. Please consider calling our Senior Solutions direct HelpLine at 802-885-2669 and express your desire to join this amazing group of individuals. A few hours a week is all it takes to make a huge difference in the life of a fellow veteran or neighbor. We will train you and support your efforts. The Vet-2-Vet visitors are managed through the local American Legions. Our volunteers are a wonderful group who enjoy each other and their buddies. So, sign up today. Call 802-885-2669!
A free aqua aerobics program for people age 60 and older will start next month in Springfield. Designed by the Arthritis Foundation, it’s been shown to improve participants’ overall well-being; increase joint function and muscle strength; and reduce pain and inflammation. The class will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10-10:45 a.m., starting Aug. 6 at the Edgar May Health and Recreation Center, 140 Clinton St. It’s appropriate for people of every fitness level and includes range-of-motion exercises, socialization activities, and an optional, moderate-intensity aerobic compoent. The program is sponsored by the Edgar May Recreation Center and Senior Solutions, the Area Agency on Aging for Windsor and Windham counties. Christian Craig, Executive Director at Edgar May, said, “We are excited to partner with Senior Solutions to bring this important program to the greater Springfield community. The Edgar May Health and Recreation Center is committed to providing the opportunities for everyone in our community to live an active and healthy lifestyle.”
“Warm water exercises like those seen in this evidence-based program are proven to help alleviate the pain and limitation seen with various types of arthritis,” said Catherine Wisniewski, for Senior Solutions’ Nutrition and Wellness Director. “We’ve had positive feedback from participants at our other two locations leading this program. That’s why they keep attending the classes.”
Advance registration is not required; walk-ins are welcome. For more information, contact Wisniewski at 802-885-2655 or [email protected]
The same program is continuing at the Upper Valley Aquatic Center in White River Junction. Call 802-296-2850 and ask them for more information.
The summer is rolling along with events and activities for us all. Remember to check and see if you can get the 3SquaresVT benefit for older Vermonters. Then take your card to participating farmers markets for Crop Cash (double your money tokens). Enjoy an open-air concert, visit local farmers markets, pick berries, hike, go to the library, use the computers and borrow some good books. How about taking a trip to visit the Billings Farm in Woodstock? They are open from 10-5 every day. Call 802-457-2355 for information. Consider taking along an old friend who may not get out much. Whatever you decide to do, take your time and enjoy things at your own pace.
