TUNBRIDGE, Vt. (AP) — A covered bridge in the Vermont town of Tunbridge is going to remain closed indefinitely after it was damaged when an oversized truck damaged it while driving across.
WCAX-TV reports the Flint Covered the Bridge Bicknell Hill Road was damaged Thursday when it was hit by a 28-foot truck.
Road foreman Rodney Hoyt says several big beams were broken and the face of the bridge is gone. The bridge will remain closed indefinitely.
The driver, who did not stop, was later identified and issued a ticket for driving too fast and operating a vehicle over the bridge’s weight limit. The driver told police he left the scene because there was no cell service in Tunbridge.
Experts say covered bridges are regularly damaged by oversized vehicles.
