Those 91a requests costly in Newport

NEWPORT — Newport School District Business Administrator George Caccavaro Jr. provided the Newport School Board with information on the costs involved in processing 91a requests for information by members of the public at its meeting on Aug. 8.

His communication follows:

“I’m providing you this info and will continue to do so on a regular basis to keep you informed of the costs to our District for processing 91a requests. I held this over for this meeting since the agenda for the July meeting was pretty full.

Since my last report in May we have expended 26.40 hours of the Superintendent’s time at a fully loaded cost of $1,563. (Actual hourly rate plus 26 percent for payroll related fringes).

Additional legal hours were billed out at $5,940 for a total expense in June of $7,523.

The July bill was not here in time for this report.

Putting this in perspective to show the negative impact of these costs, the funds could have paid for a full year of software licensing for Power School at $5,925 as well as a full year of PSNI (Professional Software for Nurses Inc.) at $1,480.

Both of these, however, are necessary costs of running our schools and will still be paid.
