CLAREMONT — Claremont Police Department released the following statement about an incident that closed down traffic Tuesday morning on Lower Main Street:
On Tuesday Aug. 20 about 7:48 a.m. the Claremont Public Safety Center received a report of a male subject on top of the railroad tracks that crossover Lower Main Street (locally known as the High Bridge) who was threatening to jump. All emergency services were dispatched to the scene and negotiations with the man began immediately.
During this event, Main Street was closed between Jarvis Hill Road and Plains Road. The State Department of Transportation was very helpful in maintaining traffic posts for us at those intersections during the pendency of this matter. Further, we were in direct communication with the railroad service to ensure that all train traffic was halted while we dealt with the crisis.
Working in collaboration with a member of the NH State Police Crisis Negotiating Unit, Claremont Police officers we were able to convince the man to walk off the bridge and seek treatment at a nearby medical facility.
We would like to thank our law enforcement partners from the NH State Police, and the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Department who helped bring this situation to a peaceful resolution fairly quickly. Further, we would like to thank the professionals from Claremont Fire Department and Golden Cross Ambulance who responded immediately and assisted us in setting up a staging area. We appreciate the patience and support of the public during the time that the road was closed.
Due to the nature of this event, Claremont PD will not be releasing any further details about the identity of the person involved.
