PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Despite controlling the time of possession for the majority of the second half, Dartmouth fell, 1-0 to Penn, Saturday afternoon at Rhodes Field. Sizzy Lawton scored the lone goal of the match in the 11th minute.
The Big Green (8-5-0, 0-4-0 Ivy) outshot the Quakers (7-4-2, 2-2-1 Ivy) 14-11 and had five corner kicks compared to one for the home team.
“My heart breaks for the team today because we had a lot of good repetitions and created good chances to score but just fell short,” said head coach Ron Rainey. “We now have to practice this week with the confidence that we played with today, and realize that we just need a little more to win these games. It takes a lot to withstand the highs and lows of the season.”
Izzy Glennon nearly put Dartmouth on the board in the eighth minute but her shot was denied by Penn keeper, Kitty Qu, with a diving save.
Penn took advantage of its first shot in the 11th minute. The ball found the feet of Lawton who took a step inside the ’18-yard box and fired the game winner to the back of the net.
Both teams played even for the remainder of the half.
The Big Green offense handled the ball for most of the second half, outshooting the Quakers, 6-4. Tracey Mills forced Qu to make her third save of day in the 71st minute and Grace Rorke nearly scored off a free kick in the 78th minute but her shot went off the top post.
Dartmouth continued to apply pressure with four corner kicks in the final 45 minutes but could not find the equalizer.
The Big Green return to Burnham Field to play their final non-conference match of the season Tuesday night at 7 p.m. against Southern Illinois.
