SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – October 19, 2019 – The Colby-Sawyer women’s volleyball team won a pair of contests at a tri-match hosted by Western New England on Saturday. The Chargers defeated the Golden Bears 3-0 and followed with a 3-2 triumph over Westfield State.
The Chargers earned a 25-18, 25-23 and 25-19 win over Western New England and defeated Westfield State by scores of 25-21, 24-26, 25-20, 17-25 and 15-8.
Colby-Sawyer evens its record at 14-14 and will play at Plymouth State on Wednesday. Western New England dropped to 11-12, while Westfield State fell to 10-12.
NOTES: Senior Morgan Flynn (Reading, Mass.) moved into fourth place on the all-time digs list with 1400. Senior Naarah Cox (Boston, Mass.) now ranks fifth in career blocks with 290, fourth in solo blocks (103) and sixth in block assists (187). Sophomore Anna Allen (Los Angeles, Calif.) is one assist shy (1499) of becoming the 8th Charger to reach 1500 career assists.
COLBY-SAWYER 3, WESTERN NEW ENGLAND 0
The Chargers hit .244 as a team, which included a first set of .355 hitting on 14 kills and just three errors.
The Colby-Sawyer duo of Naarah Cox and sophomore Sam Mohammed (Killingworth, Conn.) combined for 25 of the team’s 34 kills. Mohammed led all players with 13 kills on .400 hitting and added seven digs. Cox finished with 11 kills on .429 hitting. Anna Allen tallied 22 assists, while Morgan Flynn had 11 digs.
Hailey McDonnell led the Golden Bears with eight kills, while Cassandra Holmes chipped in with seven. Taylor Deluga posted a match best 15 digs. Caitlyn Sibiskie finished with 20 assists.
COLBY-SAWYER 3, WESTFIELD STATE 2
The teams traded the first four sets, before Colby-Sawyer used nine kills to help win the deciding set 15-8.
Anna Allen recorded a career-high 49 assists to help the Chargers finish with 61 kills. Naarah Cox was one away from a career best with 17 kills, while Sam Mohammed tied a career high with 15 kills. Sophomore Maeve Powell (Orange, Mass.) tied a career best with seven kills. Morgan Flynn led the Chargers with 28 digs. First-year Olivia Werner (Williston, Vt.) had nine kills and only one error.
The Owls had three players reach double digs in kills led by Natasha Belardo with 15. Ashley Crowley and Brianna Starkey had 10 apiece. Ally Rega set up the offense with 41 assists, while Lizzie Taylor picked up a match best 30 digs.
