NEW LONDON – October 22, 2019 – The Colby-Sawyer College women’s soccer team picked up an important 1-0 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) victory over Lasell University on Tuesday afternoon at Kelsey Field.
Colby-Sawyer improves to 7-10 overall and 4-6 in the GNAC keeping a postseason bid alive. The Chargers will celebrate senior day at home on Saturday against Albertus Magnus at 2:30 p.m. Lasell drops to 6-10 overall and 6-4 in conference action. The Lasers play at Rivier on Saturday at 5 p.m.
The Chargers broke the scoreless tie in the 52nd minute with some nice passing, which resulted in a scoring chance. First-year Sophia Chirigotis (Merrimac, Mass.) found first-year Hannah Marquis (Weare. N.H.) who then sent a thru ball to first-year Sydney Jimmo (Shelburne, Vt.). As the Lasell keeper came out to challenge the play, Jimmo slid the ball into the left corner of the net. The goal was Jimmo’s team leading ninth of the season.
Lasell did not give up late in the match and had several scoring chances. The Lasers’ best opportunities came with less than two minutes to play. Colby-Sawyer senior goalie Sam Mitchell (Chester, N.H.) stopped back-to-back shots and forced a third to miss high, preserving the clean sheet.
Mitchell finished with five saves to pick up her fifth win of the season. Lasers sophomore keeper Angela Sanzari (North Haven, Conn.) allowed one goal and made one save in the loss.
Lasell outshot the Chargers 15-4 and had a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks.
