As promised by the weatherman, the wind and heavy rain touched down during the night on Wednesday, Oct. 16 and carried over until Thursday evening. The Lake Escapee area was right near the top of the list when measurements were announced.
Newport was also very close to the top with 0.46 inches of rain on Oct. 16 followed by 2.21 additional inches on Oct. 17 for a total of 2.67 inches. The Sugar River and other streams were flowing on the high side but no flooding was reported.
The wind finally died down during the day on Friday but the daytime temperatures were on the raw side.
Atop Mount Washington at 4:27 a.m. a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 20, the 24-hour low was 30.5 degrees. On the ground there was 3 inches of snow, ice and rime with deeper drifts. Total snowfall so far during the month of October totaled 6.6 inches. The high temperature record for Oct. 20 was 52 recorded in 1963 and 1965 while the low was 1 degree in 1972.
