Sunapee dominates, continues to roll in Playoffs

SUNAPEE — The Sunapee Lakers boys soccer team continued to roll in the Division IV playoffs with a convincing 6 -1 win over visiting Moultonborough on Saturday.

Sunapee scored early in the first period with Sunapee’s Micheal

Mullen picking up a lead pass from Jackson Cooney as he outhustled a defender to the ball and burried his shot into the back of the net for a one to

nothing lead at the 5:17 mark into the game.

Sunapee continued to keep the soccer ball in front of Moultonborough’s net when midway into the first half, Parker Reed served up a corner kick and after the ball bounced around in front of the net for a bit,Harbor Flint picked up the loose ball and scored Sunapee’s second goal of the game.

Moultonborough, who Sunapee coach Jack Icopina said after the game

was “A good team who would never give up” began to mount some offense of their own that produced a direct kick about 20 yards out from the Sunapee goal. Sunapee goalie Sean Moynihan made a diving save but could not grab the ball and Gavin Porusta picked up the loose ball and scored making it 2-1 Sunapee.

Sunapee wasted no time increasing their lead when Mullen scored his

second goal of the game with an assist from Darren Hulton to make it

3-1. The game took a strange twist with less than three minutes left in

the first half. Sunapee was about to throw in the ball from the side

lines when the referees blew the whistle and Mullen was issued a

yellow card for shoving a Moultonborough player and left the game. The

scored remained 3-1 at the half.

Sunapee came out flat to start the second half as Coach Icopino

elected to keep Mullen on the bench to keep him from getting a second

yellow card. The Panthers kept the soccer ball in front of Sunapee’s

goal for the first 20 minutes of the second half, but Laker goalie

Sean Moynihan made a few saves and the Sunapee defense cleared the ball

away from the net to keep a 3-1 lead.

At about twenty two minutes in the second Parker Reed passed to Darren Hulton who kick the ball passed the Moultonborough’s goalie Ethan Larson for a 4-1 lead. Sunapee’s younger players then got on the score board when Mathew Tschudin scored with an assist from Andrew Tschudin and Laker Drew Nichols finished off the scoring with an assist from Zachary Bourque to make the final score 6-1.

The Sunapee boys soccer team will now face Woodsville, a 3-1 winner

over Colebrook, in a semi final game at Bank of New Hampshire Field at

Laconia High School on Tuesday November 5 at 4pm. Woodsville beat Sunapee 3 -2 during the regular season. The other semi final contest pits Newmarket against Littleton.
