NEWPORT — Saturday’s Holiday Craft Fair and Bake Sale event was a change for the center and is a good change, but not all changes are always good. We hear more and more about Alzheimer’s disease impacting the lives of a loved one and communication becomes more difficult, but with a little help, you can make communication easier for those struggling with dementia or Alzheimer’s.

Communication is more than just talking and listening. It is about sending and receiving messages through attitude, tone of voice, facial expressions and body language. As people with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias progress in their journey and the ability to use words is lost, families need new ways to connect.

Join the Alzheimer’s Association as it explores how communication takes place when someone has Alzheimer’s, learn to decode the verbal and behavioral messages delivered by someone with dementia, and identify strategies to help you connect and communicate at each stage of the disease.

The Alzheimer’s Association will be at the center at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 18 to provide practical information and resources to help dementia caregivers learn to decode verbal and behavioral messages from people with dementia.

This is a free program and opens to the public. Pre-registration is required and at least 10 people need to register to make this valuable program a success. Stop by today to register.

A better change to talk about is the changes to the 12 Days of Christmas Raffle. This year, we have three $500 cash prizes. This was made possible because of Mas coma Bank, an anonymous donor and once again, Goodrich Oil.

Tickets are only $5 each and are going like hot cakes. All winning tickets will be put back in for another chance to win big. Get your ticket‘s now before they are gone. This fundraiser benefits SCNS Meals-on-Wheels and congregate meal programs.

The sign-up sheets for SCNS Thanksgiving dinner, on Nov. 21, are now out at the center and at the Earle Bourdon Centre in Claremont. This is an annual tradition for SCNS and seating is limited. This banquet meal consists of all of the traditional Thanksgiving menu items. The suggested donation is $3.50 per meal.

As you prepare for your Thanksgiving dinner at home, let the Newport kitchen staff help you with your baking needs. Back by popular demand, home-made pumpkin and banana bread orders are now being accepted. The cost is $5 per loaf.

Yes, these breads are made from scratch and baked to perfection. Orders will be accepted until Nov. 16 and will be available for pick-up on Nov. 20-21. The order form is on the front desk.
