Newport Senior Center News: Dec. 7

Santa Claus is definitely making himself known here at the Newport Senior Center this week. Monday was the kickoff for our seventh annual 12 Days of Christmas Raffle. The raffle benefits SCNS Meals-on-Wheels and congregate meal programs in Sullivan County and brings awareness for the importance of preventing senior hunger right here in your own community.

We have been very fortunate to have local businesses step up to join us in this fight against hunger and could not be successful without their support. Day one was sponsored by Sugar River Bank. Pat Young was the winner of $100 and two Coronis Market grinders. Floyd Cornish was the lucky winner of $100 for Day two, who was also complimented with two grinders from Coronis Market sponsored by Clark & Mortenson. Bar Harbor Bank & Trust sponsored Day three with a $100 donation that was won by Cody Foster. Hubert’s Department Store sponsored Day four again this year. Mandy McMahon won $100 for Day 4.

Next week’s sponsors will include an anonymous donor for Day five and six, Claremont Savings Bank, LaValley Building Supply and Summercrest Senior Living. This year we will give away a total of $2,700. As you do your Christmas shopping, keep these great businesses in mind.

On Saturday, Santa will be at the center from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. to join kids for brunch. Brunch will be $5 per person and will include pancakes, sausage, milk, juice, coffee and fruit. All kids 8 and younger will receive a gift from Santa and all children will receive a candy cane. Bring your phones and get your pictures with Santa now before he heads off to the North Pole to get some rest before his long journey on Dec. 24.

You can’t think of Santa without thinking of Frosty the Snowman as well. If you would like to make your very own Frosty, don’t forget to sign up for Monday’s painting class, at 1 p.m., when you will paint an adorable snowman onto a wine bottle.

This is a great way to gather with friends and enjoy socializing. The class is $10 per bottle and limited to 12 students. If Monday does not work for you, another painting class will be on Dec. 9 at 1 p.m. This class will be painting a snowman ornament you can put on a tree or hang in the window. This class is $5 and a sample is displayed on the front desk.

Don’t forget Santa’s elves. Many elves will be at Sugar River Bank, Bar Harbor Bank & Trust and even here at the center to accept names for the Memory Tree of Lights. Sponsorships are in the memory of a deceased loved one or to honor a living loved one.

The cost is $3 per name or four names for $10. Each twinkling sponsored light will shine brightly on an evergreen tree that will sit in the center of the gazebo on the Newport common. All names will run on NCTV thanks to volunteer elf Jan McMahon.
